18-1

Giants Win

The New York Giants have beaten the “unbeatable” New England Patriots tonight 17-14. The Patriots were favored to win by more than 11 points, having beaten the Giants less than one month ago. Many people are seeing this as a victory for morality as if the unexpected final touch down by the Giants in the final 35 seconds of the game might somehow offset the cheating of the Patriots earlier in the season. The 18-1 record of the Patriots came close to the perfect undefeated record of the 1972 Dolphins of 17-0. Patriots fans will have to wait until next year for another try.

Point breakdown:

1st Quarter: Giants score field goal, 3-0. Pats score touchdown, 3-7. Also: A fun Diet Pepsi Max ad for neurotic people (1). Click to continue reading…

Europe may be illegal downloader’s dream

Free Downloading

Earlier this week, the EU Court of Justice ruled that internet service providers should not share the identities of their customers when concerning civil lawsuits regarding illegal downloading. This serves as a major blow for the recording and movie industry as they lose virtually all chance of obtaining the identity of persons who are illegally sharing music and movies. The only choices these industries now have is to plead with attorney generals for criminal cases or find another way to obtain the identities of those illegally sharing media.

Microsoft to buy Yahoo for $44.2 Billion

Microsoft Eats Yahoo

Microsoft sent a letter to Yahoo’s board of directors offering to buy the company for $44.2 billion. This highly inflated (62% above yesterday’s closing price) offer seems like a good deal to Yahoo who plans on firing 1,000 employees and spending $300 million in 2008 to revive the company.

Both, Microsoft and Yahoo, have been experiencing major pressure from search engine giant, Google, Inc, the company which practically stole Yahoo’s massive share of the search engine market early in the decade.

Google is a major competitor of Microsoft in the software and online advertisement business. Google’s policy of offering practically everything for free has put immense pressure on Mircosoft (see Hotmail’s upgrade of storage space to Windows Live). Google greatly supports the Linux operating system, even coming up with their own versions. Linux, although currently not a serious competitor for Microsoft and Apple, has been greatly increasing its market share in previous two years.

With Microsoft’s continually declining stock since Christmas, possibly due to their failed operating system (Vista), and Yahoo’s declining stock since 2005, a “merger” seems like the best way for the two companies to have a real go at Google.
