Online Education Goes Mainstream

This is a guest post by Bob Hartzell, in-house writer and chief researcher for Master Degree Online.com. Bob addresses the issues confronted by would-be college students and professionals returning to school trying to develop career options. He recently covered the accounting mba programs top 5 list according to US News & World Report.

After years of stepsister status the online education format is becoming the new greatest thing among traditional universities. It can be a boost to the revenue stream for them and it is also a way to reach the unemployed and underemployed millions who have realized they need to retool their education a bit in order to compete in today’s job market. USC took a tentative step by putting their Master of Social Work degree online and saw their enrollment in the program quadruple in two years.

They have expanded their online presence steadily and today they have an amazing graduate level program for engineering available online, offering master’s degrees in aerospace engineering, electrical, mechanical, civil, biomedical and computer engineering, and many others. Even Stanford’s gotten into the act, with sixteen online master’s degrees available in engineering and statistics. Of course you have to gain admission to the university first, and these degrees aren’t cheap. USC is asking a little over $900 per credit.

Public universities that have gotten into the online game can be much more reasonable in cost, particularly (as usual) for in-state students. There are some impressive and innovative programs out there.

1. University of Maryland has about 90,000 students worldwide studying online through the University of Maryland University College, one of the eleven degree granting institutions in the state system. UMUC is the largest provider of online education among the public universities.

2. University of North Carolina draws from all sixteen of its campuses to offer online undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of fields. They offer 27 degrees and certificates in business, 18 in computer science and IT, 88 in education, and so on through an extensive list. Click to continue reading…

Glory Daze – Episode 7 Recap (Season 1)

[Editor’s Note: Although all opinions expressed on College Being are those of our individual authors, we have been paid a fee to write the following article. This fee will not influence our opinions.]

Here is what happened on this week’s episode of Glory Daze for those that missed it. If you have not seen the series, be sure to read our introduction to this great show here.

The fraternity’s fall formal is approaching but no hotel in the area will rent them a room due to passed history. The pledges are tasked with getting a room. They pretend to be from the made-up Pro-American Conservative Youth (PACY) organization. It turns out that the organization exists and is very conservative. The hotel manager will even lock their minibars during the formal (now known as the Purity Ball).

Joel has a dream about Christie where they each admit the love they have for each other. He agrees to go on a date with the daughter of mother’s friend’s friend, a crazy girl named Tammy. During their date, Damon and Christie show up and Damon invites Tammy to the dance. Joel later tries to break it off with Tammy, but she begins to cry about her dead cat.

Brian and his girlfriend are having too much sex and their lives are being affected by the lack of sleep. They agree to have less sex and instead decide to play a game of chess. During the game, they touch hands, and of course it leads to more sex.

Jason and Julie are very excited about the formal. Jason reserves the honeymoon suite but when they get to the hotel, the room is taken by a band member (the band is called Anal Conundrum) on his wedding night.

Meanwhile, Eli is stood up at the movies and instead watches Top Gun by himself. He falls in love with the movie and decides he wants to become Maverick (from the movie). He starts dressing like him and even gets Joel to join a ROTC class with him for the “easy A”. During a presentation in the class, Eli and Joel catch Chang, who was helping them with the presentation, on fire. Eli eventually makes it up to the teacher by sticking up for Joel.

The fraternity plans how they are going to get alcohol into the Purity Ball. They come up with all sorts of 007 gizmos with all hold alcohol: a pen, a flower, and a book about the first lady.

During the dance, Joel sees Christie naked in his room (she was changing there since her room was being used for the pre-game party). They talk and everything is alright. Eli comes dressed as a Navy officer and gets a girl to (almost) have sex with him. There is a fight outside between the members of Anal Conundrum and the frat. The fight was started by Jason and the band’s lead member due to the missing bride’s maid (the one Eli is about to sleep with). Julie is impressed that Jason stood up for her. The hotel manager walks in and gets a little mad at the drinking and the fighting but gets knocked out. The band now does not have a priest to marry them so Reno decides to help them out and marries them.

The final episode of Glory Daze airs next Tuesday night at 10/9c on TBS. Be sure to check back in two weeks for an awesome Glory Daze-inspired contest!

The local radio station is having a phone-in contest to give out free General Public tickets. Joel and his roommate miss it by one, but Stankowski managed to be the right caller. Unfortunately, he is too stoned and thinks he is ordering pizza. Joel is sent to get tickets and joins Christie in line.

Meanwhile, Damon learns that the frat’s national chapter is sending an advisor within 24 hours to check up on them. Damon sees it as a time to prove to the national chapter how well they are doing. All the fraternity brothers present start cleaning and fixing up the house. Eli, Jason, and Brian are tasked with getting Stankowski sober and keeping him away from weed.

The advisor shows up early and gets a tour of the house. Everything goes smoothly. He meets Eli, Jason, and Brian who are “road blocking” Stankowski’s room. Jared, the advisor, goes in and talks to Stankowski. Stankowski cleaned up nicely. Everything goes well. Click to continue reading…

The pledges are woken-up in the middle of the night by the frat brothers. Joel is studying for a test and his roommate screams a lot. The frat brothers let the boys know that there is a very important football tournament coming up and that they all must practice hard. When practicing, Eli who is “too small to play football” surprises everyone with his incredible dodging ability. Brain, though not as big of a surprise, shows everyone what an incredible quarterback he is. As soon as Brain throws the ball, his assistance baseball coach, who appears to have been following him, tells Brain that he cannot play football due to the danger of getting injured and preventing him from playing baseball. Everyone is disappointed. Click to continue reading…
